Legalizing Cannabis
After years of hard-fought attempts and stalled negotiations, we're confident: 2022 is the year we legalize cannabis in Rhode Island. Rhode Island Senate Leadership supports not only making recreational use legal across the state, but ensuring that we do it in a way that supports the victims of the war on drugs. Our current proposal does that by ensuring that at least half of the 24 recreational retail licenses go to worker-owned cooperatives or to businesses owned by those harmed by the war on drugs.
So far, hundreds of Rhode Islanders have taken our poll on cannabis legalization (and we hope you will, too). The results so far speak for themselves:
94.8% approve of legalizing cannabis
81.6% support reserving half of the 24 retail cannabis licenses for communities harmed by cannabis prohibition and for worker’s co-ops
93.6% support automatically expunging the criminal records of people arrested for personal possession of cannabis
89.8% support a dispensary opening in their community
